We all face challenges in our professional life. Some jobs are more challenging and risky than others, but all of us are likely to agree that the role of a parent is one of the most challenging ones to undertake. Even though this role involves the raising of our future generation, very little formal training is available, and therefore, parents might be at a loss when it comes to deciding what’s best for their children. The Impact of Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma can be devastating. Physical abuse, violence, negligence of caregivers or being raised in a traumatizing environment may make children vulnerable. These experiences can interfere with the ways they function.

  • Emotional health – Children who have faced physical abuse often experience worry, anxiety, guilt, grief, and sadness. These may hamper with their daily lives.
  • Mental health – In some cases, survivors of physical or mental abuse may experience depression and anxiety. Studies have revealed that these children are prone to self-harm, and may even commit suicide. They often get addicted to alcohol, and have difficulties entering into sustainable relationships.
  • Physical health – Children who are exposed to trauma and abuse often develop a heightened sense of stress. This impacts their ability to handle emotions, and may lead to physical conditions like sleep difficulties. They may suffer from a low immune system, and develop a number of physical illnesses in later life.
