In legal terminology, crime (also known as offence or criminal offence) is a harmful act, which not only poses a threat to an individual, but also to a community, society, or the state at large. Such acts are banned and punishable by law.

The precise definition of criminal offence differs from one country to another, though acts like murder, rape, theft, robbery, sexual, physical and mental assault, and harassment are punishable by the law and authority of the state. Many countries have well-documented criminal codes that include a catalogue of crime for that country.

What Types of Criminal Behaviours are There?

There are three broad models of criminal behaviour: Psychological, Sociological, and Biological.

Psychological — The psychological models of criminal behaviour include everything from Freudian notions to the recent cognitive and social psychological models. According to the psychological approach, the primary unit of analysis in such cases focuses onn the individual himself. Crimes that result from dysfunctional, or inappropriate mental processes fall under the category of psychological criminal behaviour. A diseased mind, disturbed childhood, improper conditioning, and inappropriate learning are often considered the root cause of such criminal acts.

Sociological — Sociological and psychological principles of criminality are somewhat intertwined. A myriad of sociological formulations are the cause and control of psychological criminality. The sociological notions of criminality are triggered by social structures and cultural values imposed by society.

Biological — This kind of behaviour is often triggered by hereditary issues, neurotransmitter dysfunction, brain abnormalities caused by improper development, or trauma. Recently, some major law enforcement techniques have been adopted to address this type of criminal issues a bit differently.
