This unit aims to give learners an understanding of dementia and how individuals with dementia can be supported.

    1. Understand what dementia is
      • Explain what is meant by the term dementia
      • Describe the key features of the brain that are affected by dementia
      • Explain why depression, delirium and age related memory impairment may be mistaken for dementia
    2. Know the most common types of dementia and their causes
      • Outline the most common types of dementia and their causes
      • Describe the like signs and symptoms of the most common types of dementia
      • Describe the risk factors for the most common types of dementia
    3. Understand person-centred care and support for individuals with dementia and how this can be implemented
      • Outline the meaning of person-centred care for the client with dementia
      • Describe how to ensure person-centred care is implemented for an individual with dementia
    4. Understand interactive, meaningful communication with individuals with dementia and how this can be achieved
      • Outline the key problems individuals with dementia may face with interpersonal communication
      • Describe how staff can make communication a positive experience for an individual with dementia
